Carla Aguirre

Carla Aguirre Piris is a Communications Officer at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, providing strategic communications partnership across a range of issues and initiatives. In particular, she works closely with the foundation’s Gender Equity and Governance Program on external communications, and provides counsel to the program on communications-related grantmaking.

Grounded in her human rights and gender expertise, Carla’s strategic communications experience includes messaging, advocacy, media relations, and multi-partner issue-based campaigns. Prior to joining Hewlett, she worked with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Global Program for seven years, including serving as director of communications focusing on Latin America. A former journalist who supervised news broadcasting at FOROtv, she also previously served as deputy program officer for Freedom of Expression at Article 19. Her other experiences include working in the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs on human rights and with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Beijing.

Carla has a bachelor’s degree in international relations and politics from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México in Mexico City, and a master’s degree in human rights and democratization from the European Inter-University Centre in Venice. She lives in the Bay Area with her husband and two children.
